Cyber Circuit Now Free With In-App Purchases

Posted by sheep under All, Apps on Thursday Dec 31, 2009

Yet another game has ditched the once-standard $0.99 price to switch to a model of a free app with paid in-app purchases for revenue. This time it's Cyber Circuit [App Store, Free] from Complex Games, a shooter claiming to be inspired by the multi-level concept of Dante's Inferno. Instead of paying $0.99 for the entire app, you can now get the first six levels of the game for free, with the option to pay another $1.99 later on to get the other 24 levels. Now that 2009, a rather complex and unpredictable year is leaving us, at least we can take some comfort in knowing a few quite possible iPhone related events for 2010.

So what will be the newsmaking events in iPhone (and Apple) news for the year 2010 (year of the Tiger)?

iPhone World scoured the web for you, and here are the most likely events to happen next year in the iPhone universe.

#1 Our #1 prediction is that despite all the competition next year Apple will sell the largest amount of iPhones yet.

iphone apple 2010 predictions: iphone 4g, itablet, iphone 3gs 8gb

#2 Apple will launch the iPhone 4G (that will apparently feature a 5 megapixel camera - link) in the summer of 2010.
#3 Due to be announced in a few months is the 8GB iPhone 3GS — that will probably replace the lower-end iPhone 3G line of products - link.
#4 Apple will be announcing an “iTablet” - a touchscreen based iPhone-like computer/netbook/phone hybrid (depending on who you ask) as early as next month, according to industry insiders.
#5 iPhone apps and iPhone AppStore will become a major internet security threat this year, according to McAfee Labs - link.

What do you think will be the other major events of 2010 when it comes to Apple and the iPhone? Leave us a comment!

LEGO Systems, Inc. has just released an official LEGO application for the iPhone. Self-described as the official LEGO app for the iPhone, LEGO Photo [App Store, Free] lets you take portraits with the camera and transform them into LEGO masterpieces with the tap of a shiny, well-designed button. The overall app is very simple, pretty and well-made so it's a must-have for any true LEGO fan.

OT: The Recent NSFW Picture

Posted by sheep under All, Apps on Thursday Dec 31, 2009

Yesterday I posted an article about the iFartaholic app.  In it, I posted a screenshot from the App Store entry (a picture of Calvin from Calvin & Hobbes farting).   I then pondered how Apple let such a blatant copyright violation get through.

Sometime afterward, the image was replaced by someone outside the JAiB team to a very NSFW picture.   Unfortunately, we knew nothing about it until some shocked comments came in for moderation.

Just so you know, we consider ourselves to be a “family safe” blog.  We do not review adult applications, and we certainly do not post images anything like the one that some of you came across in that post.

Obviously, we are reviewing the site’s security, reviewing logs, and taking all the necessary and proper actions to hopefully prevent a re-occurrence.   The article has been removed in its entirety for the moment.  If you would like to see the picture that was posted, here is the link to the app in the App Store.

However, for those of you who happened to come across the altered post, we apologize.

Entelligence: Gartenberg’s best of 2009 in personal tech

Posted by sheep under All, Development on Thursday Dec 31, 2009
Entelligence is a column by technology strategist and author Michael Gartenberg, a man whose desire for a delicious cup of coffee and a quality New York bagel is dwarfed only by his passion for tech. In these articles, he'll explore where our industry is and where it's going -- on both micro and macro levels -- with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.

As the year comes to a close, it seems appropriate to cast my vote for the best (and some of the worst) gadgets I've seen. These are my personal choices for products that I felt were best of breed and really managed to differentiate themselves (or didn't at all). In no particular order, here are my picks and pans.

Best Phones: This was a tricky category, and I'm not breaking it down into different segments. This is just the best on the market in my opinion -- no matter how smart it was considered to be, or how well it did in school.
  • iPhone 3GS. It was a simple choice. Take the coolest phones on the market, bump up the memory and make it twice as fast. Add in some new features like a digital compass and toss in an ecosystem of 100,000+ apps. Sure, it's still locked to AT&T but the iPhone is still the phone that many others aspire to be.
  • Palm Pre. At this point last year many had written Palm off entirely. Instead of fading away, Palm came back on strong with webOS, a new way of integrating diverse content called Synergy and two devices launched across the globe. Along the way, the Pre garnered much mindshare from consumers, and Palm showed that you don't need to clone the iPhone to drive the state of the art forward.
  • HTC HD2. When Microsoft released Windows Mobile 6.5, there was a chorus of groans about more of the same. HTC took up the challenge and proved that there was more to Windows Mobile than slow devices and resistive screens. The HD2 takes Windows Mobile to places never seen before with a capacitive touch screen, a Snapdragon processor and HTC-created extensions that make multi-touch work the HD2's gorgeous 4.3-inch display. Wrap it all up in HTC's Sense UI and you've got the best Windows Mobile device on the market today.

Hacker Sends Warning To iPhoneUnlockUK Customers

Posted by sheep under All, Apps on Thursday Dec 31, 2009

Customers of the controversial unlocking service iPhoneUnlockUK.com received unexpected emails earlier today informing them that the company was guilty of using unlicensed software and that their personal details, including numerous email and physical addresses had been compromised. The hackers were discovered to have broken in to iPhoneUnlockUK's web servers back in February, where they gained access to the personal information of several users who had illegally unlocked their iPhones.
