iPhoneWorld.ca: Major 2010 cyber security threat: iPhone apps (so says McAfee!)
Posted by sheep under All, Reviews on Thursday Dec 31, 2009Giant computer security software developer McAfee just released its 2010 top cyber security threats countdown. Among the usual suspects, such as Facebook, Microsoft software, botnets, e-mail malware, phishing, and trojans, one thing stood out in particular: the iPhone AppStore itself.

“As users expectations of their Web 2.0 services evolve, we expect to see many rogue services set up with the hidden purpose of capturing credentials and data. Users blindly distribute applications; with the widespread availability of stolen credentials it could become very easy to launch and share these rogue apps across a wide population. The audience is there: Facebook boasts more than 350,000 active applications and Apple’s App Store recently reached the 100,000 mark. And that’s not counting the numbers in other markets. Wherever and whenever a trusted mainstream website distributes or promotes third-party content, attackers seek to abuse the trust relationship established between the site and their users. Why? Because it works. Users often let down their guard when clicking hyperlinks sent from their friends, or when installing applications offered by well-known sites,” states a part of McAfee’s report.
It appears that McAfee perceives the threat as real, but could this problem be widespread enough with Apple’s rigorous screening process? That’s a rhetorical question, since 2010 is (almost) here and we’ll know for sure soon enough.

iPhoneWorld.ca: iPhone Bluetooth keyboard: there’s an app for that… download BTstack Keyboard!
Posted by sheep under All, Reviews on Thursday Dec 31, 2009iPhone Bluetooth keyboard, a feature that was not available until now, became a reality with the recent release of BTStack Keyboard app in Cydia Store (but not in the AppStore).
What this basically means is that you will first need to jailbreak your iPhone in order to be able to use this program.
BTstack Keyboard app allows you to control your iPhone (or iTouch) using many (although not all, at this stage) widely available Bluetooth keyboards. So if you’re used to typing at 60 words per minute and miss it on your iPhone, this app is just for you. And considering that it retails for a mere $5 this purchase won’t hit your wallet hard.

Currently supported are: iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS, all iPod Touch devices. And the known supported keyboards include:
* Apple Bluetooth keyboard
* Think Outside Stowaway Universal keyboard
* Dell Axim executive BT keyboard (based on the Think Outside)
* Palm Wireless keyboard
* Freedom mini keyboard
* Logitech dINovo Edge
But you can test your keyboard first using the free lite version of BTstack Keyboard that can also be found on Cydia. The difference between it and the full ($5) version of the program, is that the former only allows you to test your keyboard inside this program, while the latter allows you to use that Bluetooth keyboard of yours in all other programs.

BTstack Keyboard download instructions:
Part 1 – if you didn’t jailbreak yet (skip this if you did)
- Before you download this app, make sure to jailbreak your device (see: blackra1n). You don’t need to unlock it.
- Make sure to install Cydia from blackra1n.app (assuming you used it to jailbreak your iPhone).
Part 2 – if your device is already jailbreaked:
- Launch Cydia
- Proceed to search
- Look for: BTstack Keyboard.
- Install BTstack Keyboard Demo so you could test your Bluetooth keyboard.
- If your keyboard worked, you can now purchase the BTStack Keyboard. The price is $5 and you can pay via Paypal and Amazon Payments.

P.S. There’s lots of videos of BTstack Keyboard in action on YouTube, so you could check those out and decide for yourself if it’s something worth jailbreaking your iPhone over.
