Cheaper iPhones With New Gestures On The Way?

Posted by sheep under All, Apps on Friday Feb 26, 2010

Rumors are swirling around about Apple possibly announcing lower-cost iPhone models in June. This one comes from Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley, who points out that cost of the device and the plan that goes with it are hands-down the biggest factors deterring people from buying iPhones. She predicts Apple is going to respond to this by announcing models with a lower over-all cost of ownership.

“We expect Apple to launch new iPhones in June that offer both a lower total cost of ownership and new functionality, potentially including gesture-based technology,” she wrote in her most recent note to investors.

She even has a fancy graph. Check it out:

Patent: Controlling Your iPhone Using Camera Gestures

Posted by sheep under All, Apps on Friday Feb 26, 2010

A new patent application filed by Apple in August 2008 was published today that describes a new way of controlling a small handheld device like the iPhone by swiping a finger in front of the camera on the back of the device while it’s still up to your ear. Uses for this might include voicemail options like rewind, fast forward, or pause, so you can control it while it’s still against your head. It also suggests using the accelerometer to control tapping input to supplement finger swipes.

Diageo recently announced they are going to beef up marketing to U.S iPhone owners and middle-aged women to help with sales. One great way they are going to get attention of the American woman is the new iPhone app that will allow them to learn new recipes to create with various liquors. The app will allow users to scan the barcode of a Tanqueray gin or Smirnoff, then recipes will be provided that uses that liquor. Cocktail recipes will so easy to find that these liquors should start selling better and faster than other liquors. The app is not available yet, but you can begin licking your lips for the introduction of 10 new vodka based products including a chocolate vodka.

Another great app for women is the Dinner Spinner Pro that will allow users to access the Allrecipes.com library to find new delightful recipes. The app will go as far as to let users create shopping lists, add their own recipes, upload photos, share recipes, and even more. Using the iphone to help in creating new dishes will certainly be a time saver for many and will even aid in more nutritious meals.

The first app was seen in December 2008 and has seen more than 2.8 million downloads. This is a paid app that offers enhanced features for only $2.99. AllRecipes is not only looking at iPhone users but will also be releasing a special optimized-for-a-large-screen for the iPad.

Symbian^4 makes video debut, fails to wow

Posted by sheep under All, Development on Friday Feb 26, 2010

Maybe it’s the lack of a banging soundtrack, but we’re finding ourselves somewhat underwhelmed by these first video appearances by the highly anticipated Symbian^4 user interface. What we’re shown is a now familiar layout for touchscreen devices, with a trio of home screens that can be customized with widgets and live information trinkets such as a clock and a weather app. It is, as promised, very touch-centric, but it is by no means revolutionary. Both videos are titled as mere “first glimpse” offerings, however, so the eternal optimist in us likes to believe that there’ll be plenty more to get excited about as we move closer to that early 2011 launch. See them after the break and let us know what you think.

iPhoneWorld.ca: App a month for iPhone Users

Posted by sheep under All, Reviews on Friday Feb 26, 2010

The truth is out about iPhone users. A new report released by AdMob this morning stated that both iPhone and Android users download and even spend time playing with or using close to the same number of apps, iPhone users were actually more likely to buy an app.

The January 2010 Metrics Report which surveyed mobile device users showed that fifty percent of iPhone users and around thirty-five percent of iPod Touch users buy no least than one application each month. Palm’s WebOS owners showed twenty four percent and twenty-one percent of Android users purchase one app per month. Research In Motion’s BlackBerry was not included in the survey.

Looking at the overall survey, iPod Touch users are at the top when it comes to downloading with 12 apps per month, against Android and iPhone owners that download on average nine apps each month. WebOS owners are back on the chart at only six apps each month. However, apps for this OS are not as plentiful.

iPod Touch users are at the top when it comes to the time spent on their device as well spending on average 100 minutes per month using the various apps they have downloaded. WebOS owners spend 87 minutes, Android owners spend 80 minutes, and last on the list are the iPhone users with 79 minutes per month.

When it comes to recommending their gadget to others iPhone users were at the top with 91%, iPod Touch users are next with 88%, Android users are at 84%, and WebOS ended at only 69%.

AdMob used the results of this survey against a survey performed in July. There was a noted rise in smartphones and devices like the iPod Touch. Along with this rise, AdMob is noticing a rise in mobile internet devices known as MID’s. In January ad requests from MID’s was 17% whereas it was only 12% in July. Among the different users that were surveyed those iPhone users that are interested in purchasing an iPad is 16% but other device owners including Android and WebOS was only at 6%.

AdMob monitors and serves ads to cell phones for more than 15,000 mobile websites for the Android, iPhone, smartphones, and WebOS. The results of the survey were collected from the responses of 963 users over a 2 week time period in February.

Jump down off that scud missile and holster your brew Droid owners, the stats are in for smartphone gender preferences. The numbers reported above are based on a AdMob survey of 963 total respondents consisting of 318 Android, 244 iPhone, 356 iPod touch and 45 webOS users in english speaking countries. According to the data collected between 5 February to the 16 February, men make up a whopping 73% of all Android device users. Even webOS, that smartphone OS from Palm that’s supposedly aimed at the ladies carries a 58% male to 42% female preference, almost exactly the same as the iPhone. While it would be easy to suggest that Verizon’s overtly machismo advertising campaign for Droid (one of the most popular Android handsets) helped skew the demographics, it doesn’t explain why its Palm ads targeting women failed to skew the webOS numbers. Perhaps it’s an unspoken man on robot love that we all recognize as truth but choose not to discuss openly for fear of reprisal? Or maybe it’s a lack of recognition for what Asian marketing geniuses figured out long ago: a device has to be pink and glittery with just a touch of lace to woo the more fickle tastes of the female demographic. Uh, yeah.

Also of interest is the Age by Platform data that shows 78% of iPod touch users are below the age of 25 compared to 25% of iPhone users and 24% of webOS and Android users. In fact, 65% of the platform are just 17 years of age or younger. That would explain the demand for all the biscuit floating apps. See the chart after the break.
