There’s Not an App For That

Posted by sheep under All, Apps on Monday May 31, 2010

Here in the US, today is the day we put aside to remember lost soldiers. It’s a day to give thanks to the sacrifice of others, a day to remember the splendor of America and those who died protecting it. It’s a day to be with family and remember those who cannot. Here at iPhone Alley, we want to say thank you to the families of lost soldiers, their sacrifice has given us the freedom to be with our families on this day. There’s no app for that.

Below are the number of people we have lost from recent wars. These are the men and women we honor today.

iLuv App Station Review

Posted by sheep under All, Development on Monday May 31, 2010

We know that this next bit of information will most likely shock and upset you, but it has to be told: the current Engadget editor doesn’t own an iPod dock. In fact, he doesn’t even own an alarm clock. Of course, it would be nice to listen to Pandora or the BBC’s Desert Island Disks without switching on the computer during those rare times when we weren’t working — but it was never a priority. Not a priority, that is, until we laid eyes on that cute Alarm Clock app (or, at least, a cardboard simulation thereof) at CES. Now that we have had the iLuv App Station in our hot little hands (and on our bedside table) for a week, the jury is in. Is iLuv’s App Station all that it’s cracked up to be? Read on, dear readers, to find out.

PosiMotion certainly announced this one well enough in advance (all the way back in December), but it looks like its Helix gaming grip for the iPhone and iPod touch is now finally available, and at Best Buy no less. In case your memory needs to be jogged a bit, this $20 contraption promises to be ideal for “virtually any game,” and let you use your iPhone or iPod touch in either portrait or landscape mode — it’ll also keep your headphones from getting tangled up for good measure. Still not convinced? Then perhaps the video after the break will change your mind — chains not included.

Take this for whatever it’s worth (which isn’t a whole heck of a lot without any official confirmation from any of the parties involved), but the New York Post has it that the Justice Department’s inquiry into Apple‘s iTunes practices may in fact be growing. ‘Course, it’s not exactly surprising to hear that authorities are now investigating every nook and cranny of Apple’s tactics thanks to Steve Jobs’ public thrashing of Flash and his sly insistence that the world shun Adobe while hugging HTML5, but we’ve still yet to hear from the DoJ and Apple about what exactly is going on within Cupertino. At any rate, the Post notes that a number of “sources” have confirmed that the inquiry is growing, most notably to include “how the iPhone and iPad maker does business with media outfits in areas beyond music.” We’d heard whispers that things may be getting just a bit too dictator-ish in the developers Ts and Cs, and now it seems that the DoJ is “asking questions about the terms that Apple lays out for computer programmers who want to develop apps for the iPad.” It’ll be interesting to see how all of this plays out, but we can bet devs (and end-users, frankly) are hoping and praying for less restrictions in the future.

Folks at SuperPhone.cz, who are claiming to have received parts of the next generation iPhone have confirmed that Apple’s new iPhone screen will be running at a resolution of 960×640. They apparently figured it out by putting the screen of the next generation iPhone under a microscope. Engadget reports: The…
