Arkon Car Mounts for iPhone 4 [Review]

Arkon is a manufacturer of car mounts for the iPhone. The company recently sent me a couple of mounting solutions for the iPhone 4, and I have been testing them out for the past month.

The package Arkon sent me contained the following items:

SM012 – Mini Weighted Friction Dashboard Mount
GN014-SBH – Travelmount Mini Swivel Windshield Suction Pedestal
AP013 Circular Adhesive Dashboard Disk
GN015-HPB-2 Mini Windshield Suction Pedestal
SM050-2 Slim-Grip Holder

First Impressions

I have to say I was a bit overwhelmed when I first received the package due to the sheer number of parts. First there is the weighted dashboard mount — which if I may be honest is far from “mini” as the product name states. Then there is an adhesive hook to prevent the weighted mount from sliding off the dashboard. Then there is the pedestal that attaches to the mount. The pedestal is comprised of several parts which you have to assemble, including the plastic pedestal itself, the Slim-Grip holder, and four support legs that you have to slide into the holder before you can mount your iPhone.

Phew! That’s a lot of parts. As Apple customers, we want products that “just work,” as the old Mac slogan goes. I don’t want to have to read an instruction manual to figure out how to use this thing. I just want to take it out of the box and use it.

Arkon iPhone 4 Mounts Reviewed

After assembling both mounts (the friction dashboard mount and the adhesive dashboard disk), I found the friction dashboard mount to be cumbersome, far from “mini,” and not well fitted to my dashboard. On the other hand, I found the adhesive disk to be a much smarter solution.

The friction mount was in fact too large to fit anywhere but right in the center of my dashboard, and even there it was difficult to hook it to the safety hook due to lack of space. Arkon advertises this mount as more portable, since you can use it in several vehicles, however my package only contained one adhesive safety hook, which is not portable yet is vital to preventing the mount from sliding off your dashboard.

The Arkon Pedestals

The one subtle difference between the GN014-SBH and the GN015-HPB-2 is that the latter allows you to adjust the angle of the holder higher or lower, in addition to the swivel ball that both pedestals feature. I like the swivel ball because it allows for easy manipulation of the iPhone’s position.

The suction cup can be attached to either the mount or to the windshield. In my experience, the suction cup was reliable and never became detached from either the mount or the windshield.

The Slim-Grip Holder

The only holder that Arkon offers for the iPhone 4 is the Slim-Grip Holder, and I must say this part makes the Arkon mount a deal breaker for me. The Slim-Grip Holder requires you to slide four support legs into grooves in the holder, but I found this to be troublesome. The reason is apparently that this is a universal mount, and so the support legs can be adjusted to suit any phone. The problem for me was that these legs were difficult to adjust without using considerable force.

Furthermore, to mount the iPhone, you need to pull the spring-loaded grip mechanism down and then it will spring back up and secure the phone to the holder. This sounds practical in theory but it is not ideal because a) it’s a pain in the butt to pull the grip mechanism down with one hand while mounting your iPhone with the other, and b) the spring puts considerable pressure on the iPhone 4, which makes me slightly uncomfortable.

I would much prefer a holder that was fitted perfectly for the iPhone 4 so that I could be spared the trouble of adjusting the legs and the inconvenience of mounting the phone with the spring mechanism.

In Conclusion

In conclusion, I like the swivel pedestal and the adhesive dashboard disk, but I was not a fan of the friction mount or the Slim-Grip holder. Show me a fitted holder that I don’t have to fiddle with too much, one that “just works,” and then I might change my mind.

The awesome hackers from the iPhone-Dev Team have released the long awaited Ultrasn0w unlock for the iPhone 4 / 3GS / 3G iOS 4 for everyone to download

The latest version of Ultrasn0w (build version 1.0-1) allows the owners of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G to unlock their devices running iOS 4.0 / 4.01.

Specifically it supports the following baseband versions…
* iPhone4 baseband 01.59
* 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04

yup, all of that is iOS 4.0 / 4.01 compliant!

Now, here’s how you can download and install this version of Ultrasn0w unlock…

Quick guide: how to use Ultrasn0w to unlock iOS 4.0 / 4.01 devices (iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G):

#1) BACKUP YOUR DEVICE VIA ITUNES (we seriously can’t stress this enough, otherwise we would’ve put the prior warning in CAPITAL LETTERS).
#2) Jailbreak your device using one of the currently available jailbreak methods – like jailbreak.me (available here) — more info on jailbreaking / unlocking is here.
#3) Inside Cydia app (which you can run from your iPhone, once your device was jailbreaked – it will be on your apps dock) go to search, and look for Ultrasn0w.
#4) Make sure the Ultrasn0w version shows as v 1.0-1 (like on screenshot below) and start the process.

#5) (OPTIONAL) – IF you can’t find Ultrasn0w, add the following repository to Cydia: repo666.ultrasn0w.com. Then go back to Step #4) and search for Ultrasn0w again.
#6) Download, install and run Ultrasnow 1.0-1.
#7) Follow instructions on screen and allow the program enough time (up to 20 minutes) to finish the unlocking process. DO NOT INTERRUPT IT!

If everything went well, you should have an unlocked iPhone 4, 3GS or 3G running iOS v4.0 or v4.01 now, all thanks to Ultrasn0w and the iPhone Dev Team.

Apple has released a new beta version 3 of iOS 4.1 SDK for registered AppStore apps developers to download.

This new version of iOS 4.1 beta – beta 3 – appears to be focused on speeding up the iOS 4 on the older iPhone and iTouch devices.

With owners of iPhone 3G and iTouch 2G devices complaining about slow performance on iOS 4, Apple appears to have disabled the new GameCenter feature, thus potentially speeding up the overall experience.

The download is available to all registered iOS developers and is designated by Apple as build number 10M3308.

Google’s Android now beats Apple’s iPhone in popularity, but suffers from debilitating piracy problems

The battle between Apple iPhone’s iOS platform and Google’s open-source (Linux-based) Android mobile phone OS was heating up for a while now.

But now it’s being reported (for the first time ever) that the Android overtook the iPhone in market share, and things might not stop here:

“Watch out Apple. Android phones are now more popular than the iPhone when it comes to new buyers, according to a report released Monday by the Nielsen company,” writes PC World.

But apparently folks that use Android phones are much more prone to piracy, at least if statics are to be believed.

“According to a report by Jay Yarow of Silicon Alley Insider, a developer of one of Android’s top ten apps is seeing 97 percent of players in Asia using an illegal copy, 70 percent in Europe, and 43 percent in North America,” writes Apple Insider.

This certainly makes the iPhone a more attractive platform of choice for apps developers, since despite the accidental AppStore acceptance snafus, Apple was so far very successful in shutting down illegal/pirated iPhone apps/games downloads site (including such major sites as appulou.us), thus basically acting an an active enforcer for apps owners.

Overall it’s very interesting to see that the closed-apps ecosphere that Apple uses with the AppStore, and the open-source initiative that Google advocates seem to yield different results and attract different users.

This, in its turn, will no doubt be one of the deciding factors — deciding which platform (and the overall idea behind it!) fall thrive or fall – iPhone or Android.
