Earlier today the web based jailbreak.me iPhone 3G/3GS/4, iPad, iTouch iOS 4.01 jailbreak tool was released.

Jailbreak.me, of course, is the web-based jailbreak tool that liberates you from Apple’s constraints on third party apps installations that was earlier available for v2.x firmware, and now is back for iOS v4.0/iOS 4.01 (iOS 3.2.1 for iPad).

However, the early version of this jailbreak tool had some serious issues, namely it disabled FaceTime and MMS features on the devices it was used on.

Now, thankfully, a new version of the hack is available that should fix these problems.

The way it goes is:

- All folks that are now running the jailbreak.me jailbreak for the first time shouldn’t worry about this issue, as it was already fixed and you should have the new version installed automatically.
- If you were one one of the first adopters though, and your MMS/FaceTime features do not work, simply re-run the jailbreak software all over again via jailbreak.me.

So like Forrest would’ve said, that’s about all you need to know about that!

You might’ve read that as of last week iPhone jailbreaking became legal in the USA. A lot of folks demanded it, the Congress said it should be legal, so Apple no longer has a say in the matter.

So hey, now you can jailbreak your iPhone, legally!

But what is jailbreaking, you might ask?

Well, before we answer this question, you need to know something about the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad. All of these devices, when you get them from store, feature a sort of write-protection that doesn’t allow unauthorized third-party user-apps (such as the ones that are not distributed through Apple’s iTunes AppStore) to be uploaded and executed on your device.

The issue with this decision, of course, is that Apple has a mandatory “screening” process for new apps,and often it doesn’t include really worthy apps in the iTunes / AppStore, thus driving developers and customers to use “jailbreaked” iDevice units.

Overall, we’re no dictionary publisher, but we’d define jailbreaking as a “process enabling the iPhone / iTouch / iPad to run unsigned-by-Apple third-party apps“.

Now that we’re clear on iPhone jailbreaking, here’s what you really came here for, a guide on how to use Jailbreak.me to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, iTouch, or iPad.

Yup, it’s the same jailbreak webapp we just wrote about, but now we’ve actually tried it and used it on one of our iPhone 3GS devices.

Here we’ll explain how to use the jailbreak.me online-based jailbreaking tool to jailbreak your iPhone / iPad / iTouch.

How to use jailbreak.me to jailbreak your iPhone/iTouch/iPad:

1) (optional): make sure your device has iOS 4.0 or iOS 4.01 (iPhone/iTouch) or iOS 3.2.1 (iPad) before you proceed to step #2.
2) (optional): we’d suggest you to backup your device’s data via iTunes, before you do anything drastic.
3) Via your iPhone / iTouch / iPad, simply access jailbreak.me . Wait for the page to load.
4) Use the “slide to jailbreak” slider to start the jailbreak process.
5) If the download/jailbreak started successfully, simply wait a few minutes for the jailbreak process to finish. If there was an error, though, simply restart from step #3.
6) Once all is done, you should receive a new message window, saying that everything was installed successfully.
7) If step #6 went right, Cydia, the app you can use to get more unauthorized iPhone apps, should now be installed on your iPhone/iTouch/iPad. You can start it from your home screen.

Note that the current version of jailbreak.me seems to break FaceTime and MMS, so you’ve been warned.

The creator of popular Spirit jailbreak, comex has released a new web based tool to unlock pretty much any model of the iPhone and iTouch, including the latest iOS firmwares iOS 4.0 and v4.01, and iOS 3.2.1 for iPad.

Jailbreak.me is a completely web based tool – all you need to do is access it and follow the instructions on screen in order to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. It appears that it uses some sort of a flaw in Apple’s Mobile Safari browser in order to get itself started and installed.

The full list of supported iDevice models you could jailbreak this with tool is as follows (as provided by the developer):

Now, here’s a mini-guide on how to use jailbreak.me…

1) Access jailbreak.me via your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.
2) Use “slide to jailbreak” to get started.
3) Sit tight and allow for the jailbreak software to be downloaded and do its thing.
4) Once done, it will report that your device is now jailbreaked. Cydia will be automatically installed.

Please note that if the page/webapp doesn’t load it’s probably because of too much load on Jailbreak.me servers. So if it fails to load, simply try again.

Also note that some reports say this jailbreak breaks the Facetime/MMS features. Keep that in mind, as there’s no known fix for that as of yet.
